Nursery Schools

Nursery Schools and nursery classes provide early education and childcare for children between three and five years old (some will take children from two-and-a-half). Nursery schools are open during school hours, usually 9am to 3.30pm in term time for full or half-day sessions.

Registration: All nursery schools are regularly inspected by CSSIW (Care & Social Standards Inspectorate of Wales), to check early learning and care is satisfactory.
Qualifications: The size of a school or class will vary, but at least one carer should be allocated to every 13 children, and the team will include qualified teachers and nursery asssitants.
Fees: It's free if part of the state education system (apart from meals and trips). Other nurseries are run by private and voluntary organisations and charge fees. Most however offer a free part-time early education places for eligible three-and-four-year-olds.
Other Information:

Your child should experience learning and development activities suitable for their age. Things to consider:

Are the rooms clean, light and big enough?

Do children look happy and purposeful?

Are toys/books/furniture well kept?

What activities are planned?

Are there opportunities for children to play outside?

There are many more things to consider; use your judgement and dont worry about asking plenty of questions.
