World Record In The Can, Thanks To Colourful Collection...
The array of cans painted a colourful picture as the long awaited 'Metal Miles' came to an electrifying celebration with over 80,000 cans lining the floor of Bridgend Rec.
Over the past few weeks, children, youth and parents in Bridgend have been collecting drink cans in preparation for the World Record Attempt.
Early Thursday morning on 26th October the first can was laid and the record attempt began. Throughout the day: children, youth and local workers came to help line up the drink cans. The rules were rigid and precise and Local Police were there to keep a close eye on the record breakers; making sure all cans were touching and no crushed ones were used.
Members of the Children's Information Team joined pupils from schools across the borough in lining up the thousands of cans.
Gaynor said "Walking into the Rec. was impressive, albeit smelly as already over 30,000 cans had been laid!! We had an enjoyable and energetic hour lining up the array of cans."
Anna quoted "it was great fun contributing to the record attempt... we used our team working skills and set up a great system of sorting, passing and placing the cans."
At the eve of the day, the cans exceeded the current record... but work didn't stop and everyone carried on until the whole floor was filled.
After a well earned rest, the next morning the official judge came along to count all the cans individually....not a small task!!!!
Then the celebrations began:
'Bridgend has become a RecordBreakingCounty and is down in History for lining up 84,498cans - beating the current record by over 20,000 cans.'
'METAL MILES' has been both fun and encouraging. Recycling is of increasing value in today's lifestyles and an event like this is a brilliant way to promote its importance and encourage all ages to contribute and begin the habit of everyday recycling.
Recycling is seen as a hassle for some, but Bridgend is beginning to put measures in place to make it convenient and easy. When we consider how much waste we collect in just one week, recycling becomes an evident need. Let's hope that the collection of cans continues over the coming weeks and children and parents become enthusiastic about Recycling.
